I skied the normal Elver race loops over the noon hour and talked
with a few other skiers who were out on the trails. Much of the
trails are in OK condition and decent to ski on. However, each
loop has exposed dirt and rocks in places, particularly on any,
even slight, climb where the snow gets churned up. This will
likely further deteriorate with more skiers. These spots are
fairly easy to spot in the daylight. But, I don't feel that a
course can be put together at this time that would not present a
significant risk to both skis and bodies given that skiers would
be under the lights, in close proximity and skiing at speed.
Therefore, after talking with Russ Hefty, City of Madison,
I have decided to NOT hold a race this evening. Hopefully,
conditions will improve by next Tuesday.

This is also a call for volunteers to help with snow shoveling,
course marking, registration, timing and clean-up next Tuesday. I
will be at Elver by 4:30 to begin set up. Registration will begin
at 5:45, with a race start at 7. Three to four volunteers are
needed. Please contact me at 231-1876 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you can
help.
