NORTHWEST WISCONSIN CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAILS
WEATHER WARM WINTER
CABLE, Wis. (January 24, 2002) Despite unseasonably warm temperatures, late or little snowfall, and a prolonged winter drought, many cross country ski trails in northwest Wisconsin still offer good skiing opportunities for Nordic skiing enthusiasts. While expectations were optimistic following last years excellent winter, snowfall in the northernmost counties of Wisconsin is lagging far behind normal levels. The most notable exceptions to these unusual conditions are Bayfield, northern Sawyer, and Iron Counties where snow depths have hovered from a minimum of four to six inches in the southern part of the region to eight or more inches further north. Reports from Rusk, Price, and parts of Washburn Counties also show numerous trails in those areas with trail bases of two to four inches.
The Cable/Hayward area has successfully been able to weather recent warm days and regularly groomed trails such as the American Birkebeiner Trail, Telemark Resort, Seeley Ski Trail and the North End Trail all have very good to excellent skiing at this time. I skied the Birkie Trail on Tuesday late in the afternoon says Ron Bergin, Cable-area resident, and I was amazed how firm the trail was on day when the temperatures climbed t o near 40 degrees.
Further north, Mt. Ashwabay in Bayfield and Mt. Valhalla (Teuton and Valkyrie Trails) also have been offering regularly groomed trails with good to very good conditions. In Iron County, the Montreal and Uller Trails have benefited from lake effect snow and have some of the deepest snow bases in Wisconsin. Across the border in Michigan, ABR Trails and Wolverine Nordic have enjoyed the full effect of numerous lake effect snowfalls and are enjoying a far more normal winter.
Numerous other trails, however, have not seen regular grooming this winter, but have been skied in by cross country enthusiasts who still want to visit their favorite trails such as Rock Lake (Cable), Penokee Mountain (Mellen), or Nordic Woods (Stone Lake).
Cross country skiers wishing to pursue this popular winter sport should not dismay as there are plenty of great opportunities awaiting in the northern counties of Wisconsin.
