hello everybloody,
whether u skied 4 2 hours or 10hours, we were all
faced w/ the same circumstance of not quite knowing
the remaining distance to ski; all things thus being
equal, how we handled it was our individual decision.
personally, i upped the ante at about 40k+, then
especially at 44k. when i reached the 45k sign and
the hilltop thereafter, and realized what's up, i just
had to slow down a bit again til the last 200+ meters.
i think this was actually an interesting phenomenon,
and i have no plans to file complaints w/ anyone. it
was a curious finish to my first race, but, then
again, i was quite happy w/ my pace, anyway, so it
would take a pretty disturbing cataclysm to worsen my
mood on a day like that. hope y'all had a great one,
too (overall).
Regarding Great Bear Chase in Calumet, MI in early
March: i have no plans to ski it, but was there
earlier the week of the Birkie, and skied the
Swedetown trail system, home of the GBC race. it was
great, conditions exemplary, course nice, although i
would have appreciated a few more REAL hills; the
place doesn't have much in the way of heart-stopping
"screamers," but it's beautiful and fun nonetheless.
enjoy, & good luck skiers.
matt zak, milwaukee
