Hi
Skied the N Highland/American Legion SF DNR trails
last weekend: Raven, McNaughton, Madeline, Escanaba
Lake. All are in great shape.
1) Esc. Lk. is very scenic & constantly rolling, w/ a
variety of topography; very beautiful.
2) Raven has some scenic parts but, in my opinion, its
unique attribute is da EXPERT LOOP! Talk about 4
(yes, four) smashing descents, interspersed among a
dozen other downhills; word has it this loop breaks
several bones a year--don't be the next victim!
Actually, there are two other screamers that can be
"bypassed", plus another one on the green
(intermediate) loop.
3) Madeline is second-tier, mostly beginner, w/ one
screamer. still nice & fun.
4) McNaughton is beginner, w/ nice skating loop around
McN. Lake.
5) Also skied Razorback Ridges. They're having their
annual "Swimsuit Ski" Sat March 9 at 2pm, I think.
see photographs from last year in the warming hut @
trailhead. this is 3k event (2k last year b/c too
cold). also 1k swimsuit snowshoe race. outdoor hot
whirlpool will be on hand. don't forget to wear your
speedos or g-string, whichever applies...
R. Ridges is an extensive system w/ both
skate/classical skiing west of Sayner, i.e. northwest
of Eagle River, off Hwy N where it intersects w/
Razorback Road @ McKay's Corner Store.
