Dear MadNorSki members,
I have some sad, sad news to report. On Tuesday
evening Club member Tom Rebholz was taking off in his experimental airplane from
Cottage Grove airport when he crashed. He did not survive.
Tom's interest in skiing was broad and
included recreational & racing pursuits. He could often be seen at Elver
with a headlamp on squeezing in some late night kilometers or a Tyrol cranking
some turns.
Tom has regularly assisted me in coaching the
MadNorSki Juniors. He was on hand coaching at nearly all our
roller ski practices the past 4 years and has been in the thick of our waxing
frenzies at Badger State Games and High School Championships those years. His
selfless devotion is all the more impressive considering his son quit the junior
program after his first year.
He was an avid pilot and jointly purchased a
plane with a few friends to get in more flying time. I believe the craft he went
down in was his new homemade experimental. As an adult member of the Young
Eagles program, over the years Tom provided nearly 60 area youth with their
first airplane rides.
As an enthusiastic cyclist, he rode
recreationally and nearly every day to work. Tom was in information technology
with the Department of Workforce Development.
Many young skiers benefited from Tom's devotion,
his quiet but strong ways, his dry humor and his willingness to pitch in
wherever he was needed. We will all miss him greatly.
Tom is survived by his wife, Nancy and their two
sons, Peter and Dan.
Keep an eye on Thursday's newspapers for funeral
information.
