For a 2 mile candlelight hike on Cox Hollow Lake, and possibly a ski if conditions
permit (walk your skis to the lakeshore), come on out this Saturday, January 18th,
from 6 pm to 9 pm. Hot drinks, warming hut, bonfire and food. Dedication and viewing
of the new grooming equipment will take place at 7:30 pm.

The park staff at Governor Dodge cannot, nor will not, recommend skiing on the two
large lakes for safety and liability reasons (in the same way that they do not
specifically "recommend" conditions to be safe for ice fishing or ice skating). I
would point out, as a member of the local Friends group and also a MadNorSki-er
looking for snow, that most area lakes have been fair for some sort of skiing after as
little as 1 to 2 inches of snow. A wetter snow tends to adhere to the lake surface
after a night or two and makes for adequate skate skiing, and the small amounts of
dryer snow we have been getting favor classic skiing near the shoreline (with
occasional slippage or peel-through to the ice), where less snow is blown off the
surface. A perimeter loop at Twin Valley Lake, the largest lake in the park, is about
8K. Watch out for muskrat activity (open holes with weedy dirt hummocks) near the
swimming beach and north end, and, of course, stay well clear of the inlets and
dam/spillway areas on both lakes.

This is in no way a recommendation, endorsement, or encouragement from the Governor
Dodge State Park staff or the Friends of Governor Dodge State Park to ski on the lake
(other than at the candlelight ski if conditions are determined to be safe on the day
of the event). This information is provided merely as point of fact. All safety
considerations and responsibilities are taken on by the user.

Director, Friends of Governor Dodge State Park
