Subject: Re: Course & Race Update

January 20th Trail Update: Thanks to new snowfall and dedicated volunteers,
conditions on the Noque course improved significantly over the weekend.
Anywhere from 2-8 inches of lake effect snow fell over Noquemanon Country,
the Bombardier snow cat was out grooming most of the weekend and crews
worked to cover any thin spots. The full 55 K Noquemanon course now appears
likely to be ready for race day. Jon Mommaerts, Race Director, stated this
morning that, "We're 80% sure we'll have the full race course ready. The
course today is in much better shape than it was last year and we still
have time for additional snowfall and trail preparation." Lake effect snows
are forecasted for tonight and parts of the week.

A rundown of course conditions from the start to finish follows:
The start area at Al Quall is in fair condition today. Snow will be trucked
into the start area if needed. The trail improves upon leaving the start
area and entering the woods and stays good to the Deer Lake Spillway. Crews
will be working on the Spillway throughout the week.
The course is in excellent shape from the Spillway all the way to the final
5 K outside Marquette. The Bombardier has packed a snow base of anywhere
from 6-14 inches throughout the area. This includes the Zhulkie Hills,
Granite Pointe, Mead Highlands and Forrestville, an area comprising roughly
80% of the total course distance.

The course changes to good to fair as one drops from Forrestville into the
Marquette outskirts, in the vicinity of Kirby's Gulch. The snow base ranges
from 1-6 inches. Some thin spots are on the course in exposed areas, such
as along the railroad grade in the final K. There are far fewer thin spots
in town than were the case last year. Volunteer crews have been assigned to
each area and will be shoveling, blowing, and hauling in snow to fix these
areas. The combination of cold temps we are currently enjoying, the fresh
snow we've received and the grooming capabilities we now have make us
confident that this portion of the course will be in good shape by race
day.

We should have several photos of the course posted on this website later
today. We will continue to post daily course updates on the web site
through race day.
