It does seem that your rpm database in the image got messed up. When you did the rebuild, did you try to remove your old rpm database files before the rebuild?
cd /install/netboot/centos5.5/x86_64/compute/rootimg/var/lib/rpm and rename/remove the __db.* files Then you can try to rebuild directly (without having to change genimage): chroot /install/netboot/centos5.5/x86_64/compute/rootimg rpm --rebuilddb You can try other chroot rpm cmds to see if your rpm database in the image is now good. If none of that works, and you get really desperate, would it be too painful to remove the image (xCAT rmimage command), and run a clean genimage from scratch?
