ran yum clean all (which cleared the hosts cache for fastestmirror), disabled fastestmirror plugin and sent the node to reinstall. It works perfectly now.
Thanks for all your help
the Centos-Base.repo was disabled even before that, but fastestmirror plugin is enabled the moment yum starts.
Possibly easiest to resolve is to break the yum logic to two steps:
yum clean plugins
yum --disableplugin=fastestmirror -y install ...
in otherpkgs.
Haven't tested that.

Thanks again, you were a great help

It really has problem in your env that otherpkgs does not work during the installation.
xCAT supplies two approaches to make otherpkgs to work:
1. Using 'yum'. In your env that several .repo files (/etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-*.repo) were created on your installed node, and inside the .repo, the url address like 'mirrorlist.centos.org' cannot be resolved by the OS that caused the yum failed. I'll discuss this inside xCAT team to see how to resolve it. 2. If 'yum' failed, using 'rpm'. It should work on you env, but your configuration file '/opt/xcat/share/xcat/install/centos/compute.centos6.1.x86_64.otherpkgs.pkglist' has problem. Put the blcr instead of blcr.x86_64, since the rpm name is blcr-0.8.4-1.x86_64.rpm
Following dependency could not be found in the specified path:
pkgconfig(libxml-2.0) is needed by hwloc-devel-1.3-0.el6.x86_64
perl(DBI) is needed by slurm-slurmdb-direct-2.3.2-1.el6.x86_64
libpq.so.5()(64bit) is needed by slurm-sql-2.3.2-1.el6.x86_64

The reason that updatenode worked in your env was that updatenode run the 'ospkgs' postscript inside that cleaned/created the corrected .repo file. As a work around, I added the 'ospkgs' as the postscript for the node in your env, but did not get chance to get the result.

Thanks

All info I could think of is in the attached file. Let me know if I can send any more info. Wang - the cluster is again accessible from the internet, same as before. So - why do I need to run updatenode manually to execute the postscripts, and why doesn't "updatenode otherpkgs" work?

Thanks all

So you meant the otherpkgs during the installation did not
        work, but update
ohterpkgs worked after the reboot of the node, right?

Could you confirm that the optherpkgs was added in the
        postbootscripts
        attribute (postbootscripts=otherpkgs)

        Thanks
