Tried some of the things you suggested in the ST chat we had this morning.
Sending to the list so everyone sees it:

xdsh node015 date works

xdcp node015 -F /install/custom/install/rh/compute.synclist fails with the
same ssh error

Contents of compute.synclist are as follows:

/etc/hosts /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group -> /etc

sshd UID & GID are the same on xCAT MN and node015

Touched a file in /tmp called file1 and made a new synclist

/tmp/file1 -> /tmp

Got similar ssh error using xdcp:

xdcp node015 -F /install/custom/install/rh/compute.synclist
node015: usage: ssh [-1246AaCfgkMNnqsTtVvXxY] [-b bind_address] [-c
cipher_spec]

node015:            [-i identity_file] [-L

node015:            [-l login_name] [-m mac_spec] [-O ctl_cmd] [-o option]
[-p port]
node015:            [-R [bind_address:]port:host:hostport] [-S ctl_path]
node015:            [-w tunnel:tunnel] [user@]hostname [command]
node015: rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far)

Could you give me a copy of the compute.synclist file and also in /tmp you
should have a /tmp/rsync_node015 either on the MN, or if this is
hierarchical, on the Service node.
I assume xdsh node015 date is working fine and you can create the problem
just by running
xdcp -F /install/custom/install/rh/compute.synclist
