After install you an use xdcp <nodegroup> -F <path to synclist> to accomplish your function. That is the only way, I can think of to limit a synclist to a particular group. For install and updatenode, you are correct the synclist is associated with a node's image definition and you would need one defined for each group.
Your question about a script running out of the EXECUTE statement of the synclist, checking nodegroup membership is a little harder. You do not have that available on the node for the synclist.
