Guang,

First, thx for your response.

I should probably state this is a statefull installation.
The reason for not using otherpkgs is we must have it done before the
reboot. we could put the script in the postscripts and not in the
postbootscripts but we did not want to mess with the environment (this is
only part of the statefull installations we have in our cluster and looked
for a solution that can keep the environment as generic as possible).
This is also the reason for not updating the OS repo (/install/os/arch.. )
because we have a running system and we do not want to change the kernel
on our statelite nodes and the other statefull nodes. this kernel change
should apply only to one type of nodes (the service nodes due to this -
https://www.suse.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7011397).

We ended up adding this as a repo to the .tmpl file (not an easy task at
all apparently.. you need to follow the add on rules of Yast, wasn't so
trivial).

Looks like the new feature will make everything much easier.

thx.

HI Gilad,

The otherpkgs or ospkg should work:

Otherpkg:

# On MN, You need to:
# 1. put rpms under /install/post/otherpkgs/os/arch directory where
'os' and 'arch'
# can be found in the nodetype table.
# 2. put the name of the packages to
/opt/xcat/share/xcat/netboot(install)/platform
# directory. The file name is one of the following:
# profile.os.arch.otherpkgs.pkglist
# profile.os.otherpkgs.pkglist
# profile.arch.otherpkgs.pkglist
# profile.otherpkgs.pkglist
# 3. updatenode noderange otherpkgs

ospkg:
# On MN, You need to:
# 1. update the rpms under /install/os/arch/... directory where
'os' and 'arch'
# can be found in the nodetype table.
# 2. put new package names to
/install/custom/netboot(install)/platform or
# /opt/xcat/share/xcat/netboot(install)/platform
# directory. The file name is one of the following:
# profile.os.arch.pkglist
# profile.os.pkglist
# profile.arch.pkglist
# profile.pkglist
# updatenode noderange ospkgs

BTW, in xCAT 2.8, a new feature was added to support os updates, you could
specify the pkgdir to be multiple paths like:
pkgdir=<osbasedir>,<osupdatesdir>, then the os installation or updatenode
could recognize the os updates automatically.

Thanks,

Subject: [xcat-user] Upgrading new kernel

Hello list,

i looked on the web site and i'm sure i missed something -
What is the best way to upgrade new kernel on the machines installed by
xCAT. the tricky issue (??) is that those servers are also used as service
nodes and cNFS servers.
Should we add this repo to the .tmpl file (similar to teh SDK)?

thx in advance.
