Thought I'd highlight some particular 2.8 changes in advance (i.e. in time
for the wider userbase to voice concerns and change direction if
appropriate).
One area that may particularly impact people: Deprecation of nodeset
netboot/install/statelite in favor of 'osimage'. There is a plan to have
an osimage command to trivialize adding a new template file to the
template, but that isn't complete yet. While the 'old' syntax currently
works, it nags:
# nodeset n1 install
Warning: The options "install", "netboot", and "statelite" have been
deprecated. They should continue to work in this release, but have not been
tested as carefully, and some new functions are not available with these
options. For full function and support, use "nodeset <noderange>
osimage=<osimage_name>" instead.
n1: install centos6.3-x86_64-compute
While using osimage entries appear as follows:
# nodeset n1 osimage=centos6.3-x86_64-install-compute
n1: install centos6.3-x86_64-compute
Current thinking is to offer a client environment variable for CLI and XML
tag for API to suppress the nag once acknowledged. Alternatives would be
a CLI argument or site table entry to suppress nagging.
So there are two parts to this, comments on the nagging in 2.8, and
comments on the potential eventuality of that syntax going away at some
point.
Another area to highlight is the Windows support. In addition to adding
Windows 2012/hyperv2012/windows 8 support, we may require windows users to
rerun genimage(.cmd) to create a new Windows PE environment using the newer
ADK instead of older WAIK version. The Windows PE image would also
increase in size to allow us use of PowerShell directives. The consequence
being that an update to 2.8 without taking the time to make new
'/tftpboot/Boot' contents may break Windows deployments.
