2.7.6 to 2.8.x. I could keep the same version and then upgrade if
folks thought that safer. I could possibly upgrade first which might
be even better (the osimage changes have me a little nervous).

Yes, that will be the plan.

Planned. I do periodic dumpxCATdb to preserve configuration history
and look for unexpected changes. auditlog is off.

Never looked at it before. It shows one other directory I had not
planned to copy (/root/.xcat).

LKV: You do not need to copy this directory. When you install 2.8 xCAT on
the new MN, it will be created for you. These are the credentials. When
you run makeconservercf, it will update the credentials. Since you have not
service nodes, you don't have to worry about sending the credentials to the
nodes. They are not used on compute nodes.

xcatsnap looks useful, but it appears preserve the ssh and ca private
key files. I don't like the idea of these being sent outside the
cluster, even for diagnostic purposes.

I want to preserve the old ssh keys (at this time). External systems
have them in various known_hosts files and I don't want to deal with
the fallout at this time.

LKV: Ok, I think you are talking about /root/.ssh keys. Copy them
to /root/.ssh on the new management node before you install xCAT. If they
are there, xCAT will not replace them.

In the future I want to change the ssh keys but I would rather that be
a separate step. (We also need to periodically change all the other
secrets on the cluster, root password, bmc passwords, switch
passwords, etc).

Later on you can just use xcatconfig -k to change them and the man page
for xcatconfig will tell you what you need to update.

I'll probably copy (and cleanup) /install to the new node.

LKV: You have to be careful here. Unless you do upgrade the old MN to
the release you are going to be installing on the new MN.
The /install/postscripts and prescripts directory and subdirectories will
not match. If you put the 2.7 /install/postscripts on 2.8 there will be a
problem.

The xCAT node is the last thing in this cluster running CentOS 5.
Everything else has already been upgraded.
