Hi Devs,

Any feedback to assist with this? I just want to ensure we follow the right path and not shoot ourselves in the foot again :)

Hi all,

I am working on upgrading an older xCAT 2.3 cluster to 2.8.1. One of the issues my predecessors ran into is both bmcsetup and wvid not supporting specific hardware at the time, and as a result a lot of customization were done to the stock xCAT code to add support. Specifically:

  * bmcsetup - Added "if" statements to several spots to prevent some
functions from running if the hardware isn't IBM. These functions
caused bmcsetup to fail on certain Dell hardware.

  * wvid - Edited several modules (ipmi.pm, blade.pm) to add support
for older IBM blade hardware, Dell iKVM, c6100's, etc. Will launch
appropriate rvid scripts based on columns we are keying off of.

I am trying to avoid porting these changes to 2.8.1's code base, as it makes future upgrades very difficult. Specifically, I do not want to edit any of the stock files provided by the xCAT packages if I can help it.

Is there a better way of adding support for unsupported hardware to wvid and bmcsetup? Any recommendations on how best to go about it?

Thanks so much!
