So, let me see if I understand what you are asking.
You have an existing xCAT management node, with or without your own local
compute nodes. You want to grow your xCAT cluster, not through purchasing
and installing your own lab hardware, but rather through going to a Cloud
services provider, and asking for some nodes - either VMs or full
bare-metal nodes. You would then like to be able to use your xCAT
management node to provision OS images to those new nodes and use all the
other great xCAT remote management capabilities (xdsh, updatenode, etc.,
etc.) to manage those nodes.
We have been doing some work with SoftLayer clouds. See:
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/xcat/index.php?title=Using_xCAT_in_SoftLayer
if this is along the lines of what you might be interested in.

Hi Ling,
No, I am talking about the ability to deploy additional compute nodes into
"a cloud" from xCAT (like the Rocks EC2 roll is designed to do).

So are you talking about deploying infrastructure node into an
existing cloud? Meaning xCAT deploys a stateful, baremetal node and
add it into an existing cloud. That node can host VMs in the cloud,
correct?
