Maybe the messages log would have information. After you log in as
admin/admin then do settings to change the password. Do not log out; go to
Nodes->nodes, checkmark the xcat userid, then do actions-> run script. In
the run script do a
tail -n 100 /var/log/messages
See if any errors appear near the " xCAT: xCAT: Allowing webrun passwd"

That doesn't seem to be the problem.
link xcat 100 100 rr
DASD 0100 LINKED R/O; R/W BY XCAT
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 14:09:11
Also I would think if that had been the problem I would still be able to
logon with admin/admin as the new password would not have been written.

I just changed my password on a test system from admin to various things:
admin2, admintest, admin2W
I would log out of the GUI and then log back in using admin and the new
password and it worked just fine.
You don't by chance have the 100 disk linked by another zVM userid so that
xCAT cannot get the disk in write mode?

I restored XCAT 100 minidisk. Started the UI - logged in using
admin/admin - changed the password again, this time using a very simple
password so there would be no typos, and again when I logoff and try to
logon with the new password - Authentication failure
How can I debug this problem?

No, I didn't change it in the passwd table. This z/VM 6.3, so no access
to the cmdline, only the UI.
I'll figure out a way to restore the XCAT minidisk.
