I would argue that the Infiniband (IB) fabric is unrelated to xCAT.

xCAT handles the provisioning of the nodes. It will install the operating
system and any IB drivers.

However, the driver stack on any given node is completely irrelevant to:

1) The IB fabric topology.

2) The IB subnet manager

The choice of topology is an architectural decision. It involves specific
choices of hardware (switches) and connections (copper, fiber optic).

The IB subnet manager is typically elected automatically in the fabric, usually
it’s a switch.

xCAT deals with neither of those, as it’s purely a software product.

Regarding (7), the provisioned nodes will typically use Ethernet by default.
This is dependent on the operating system that the machines are built with. One
could configure an OS image such that it uses the IB fabric for internet
access, via IPoIB, by default. This would be non-standard and would require
bridging the IB fabric with an external network.

Subject: [xcat-user] Configuration of xCAT on the top of Infiniband

Hello All,

I am trying to set up xCAT on the top of Infiniband environment. However, I
have following questions which are not clear by going through the Documentation
about the xCAT:

(1) What is the recommended topology for the management/service network?
(2) What are the limitations on the topology for the management/service network?

(3) What is the recommended topology for the InfiniBand application network?

(4) What are the limitations on the topology for the InfiniBand application
network?

(5) What is the recommended topology for the site network?

(6) What are the limitations on the topology for the site network?

(7) What network does each compute node use to access the Internet?

(8) Does xCAT retrieve all informations about the nodes through the Subnet
Manager of Infiniband?

Looking eagerly for your reply.

Thanks,
