I haven't done a lot of exploration into the specifics, the official statement
is:
" •vCLI , PowerCLI , and vSphere SDk for Perl are limited to read-only access
for the free vSphere Hypervisor edition. To enable full functionality of vCLI
on a VMware ESXi host, the host must be licensed with vSphere Essentials,
vSphere Essential Plus, vSphere Standard, vSphere Advanced, vSphere Enterprise,
or vSphere Enterprise Plus."

nodeset and similar would work (they have no idea about the 'hardware'
management piece), but the link between mkvm automatically filling in mac
addresses would be missing and require manual effort to fill (on vacation, but
iirc rinv shows vmware mac addresses).
If I were doing prototyping, I'd probably focus on the eval license with a
thought of purchase if sticking with ESXi. I might otherwise consider a KVM
solution.

I think we are indeed using the free license. What exactly do you mean by
"doesn't let us automate it"? Do you mean, basically, that the commands like
mkvm won't work (which is just a wrapper around the VMWare SDK functions
right?) and that (with the free license) we would have to create the VMs
manually? But if so, even once they are created (manually) can xCAT deploy an
image to it via ESX (following the rsetboot, nodeset, rpower instructions in
the wiki) if we are using the free license? Or are you saying xCAT simply will
not be able to deploy anything to a VM at all with the free ESX license?
