Just an update. Manually modifying the init script to "insmod ixgbe.ko
allow_unsupported_sfp=1" allowed the node to boot.
It would be great if xCAT could support in the init script to look for
network driver options in the command line and follow those at init
time. That doesn't seem to be supported :)
