You have discovered a bug in the xCAT noderange.

What xCAT does in that case is interpolate that into an expanded view, so
Gets expanded to:
Before evaluation (with obvious problem).

Note that while I wasn't aware of this specific issue, the confluent noderange 
actually does the right thing:
# nodelist mei[1-5]1xt

It is suboptimal, but you could do nodels mei[1,2,3,4,5,6]1xt  which would 
work.  There are a few limitations in the [] syntax as implemented by in xCAT today.
