Sandra,

I don't know that you can do anything about the default dns entries with
the "-" appended, but you can give that interface an additional host alias
for clean dns resolution:

nicaliases.eth1=node1.public.com

I do this quite a lot to get around that default naming behavior for
other interfaces.  Not sure if this is quite what you're looking
for...
