We documented getadapter process in the xcat-core, but didn't post on
xcat-docs.readthedocs.  I will add it.

that's the steps to use getadpater
# chdef <noderange> chain="runcmd=getadapter"
# run node discovery, after completed, the nicadapter of nics table is
updated
# lsdef mid05tor12cn15 -i nicsadapter
Object name: mid05tor12cn15
    nicsadapter.enP5p1s0f0=mac=08:94:ef:80:d9:6d linkstate=UP
pci=/pci0005:00/0005:00:00.0/0005:01:00.0
candidatename=enP5p1s0f0/enx0894ef80d96d
    nicsadapter.enP5p1s0f1=mac=08:94:ef:80:d9:6e linkstate=DOWN

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [xcat-user] Consistent network device names

Hi All,

I am looking at how we might define secondary network devices on machines.

Our current definitions make use of nicaliases, nichostnamesuffixes,
nicnetworks, nicips and nictypes defined on a per-group basis (-eno1,
-eno2, -ib0) and membership of the group defines the mpi network.

How would we go about defining the secondary network when using
consistent device names?

I found this email from 4 years ago looking at the same issue.
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__sourceforge.net_p_xcat_mailman_message_35193146_&d=DwICAg&c=jf_iaSHvJObTbx-siA1ZOg&r=n1LR_Py9TQX0dVqfGTbLHUMGx25-C8VtBDS0nCzyNXY&m=jtEPhnQfgqhsO6rl838bv8X3lQEOyvfsVLkxiPSzabo&s=H76qh1iMwPmsz5G9hLVndPFOUoYLZ0cb46KQ6uB2c5o&e=

I see that getadapter.pm exists, but I'm not sure how we would define
the secondary network to allow for a large group of dissimilar device
names - especially if the device name is being discovered in post?

It looks like it is possible - with nicsadapter maybe? - but I can't
think it through.

Has anyone solved this problem in practice or have an idea on how it
might be done?

Cheers
L.
