updatenode <noderange> -S can be used to push out software updates to the
nodes after they have been installed.

As a follow up, if I have updated the pkgdir list on an osimage, how do I
push out the new
conf? Is it as easy as updatenode <noderange> -F?

No, when I run that there's no addition to the target /etc/yum.repos.d/ ...

It is possible or is xcat designed that if you are going to update you may
as well rebuild?

cheers
