That second example should have been:
[root@r3u20 ~]# virsh dumpxml deploydemo|grep 'mac add'
      <mac address='52:54:00:fc:54:2b'/>
[root@r3u20 ~]# nodedefine deploydemo net.hwaddr=52:54:00:fc:54:2b

So for VMs, skip 'discovery' and just fill it out the identifier (mac address
or uuid) using nodeattrib or nodedefine.

Libvirt based example:
root@r3u20 ~]# virsh dumpxml deploydemo|grep uuid
 <uuid>0da3b650-0e03-4b95-9162-8080f809eaed</uuid>
[root@r3u20 ~]# nodedefine deploydemo
id.uuid=0da3b650-0e03-4b95-9162-8080f809eaed

Or, if you don't like UUID:
root@r3u20 ~]# virsh dumpxml deploydemo|grep uuid
 <uuid>0da3b650-0e03-4b95-9162-8080f809eaed</uuid>
[root@r3u20 ~]# nodedefine deploydemo
id.uuid=0da3b650-0e03-4b95-9162-8080f809eaed

The missing piece right now is that you have to:
# nodedeploy <node> -n -p <profile>

Note the '-p' which means "don't talk to a BMC". Then you have to otherwise
restart the VM and have it network boot.

I've been wondering about the relative demand for 'hardware control' for VMs,
for libvirt, proxmox, and esxi hosts, nodeconsole, nodeinventory, nodesetboot,
and nodepower.

To expand on Stuart's question: the problem appears to be that
nodediscover expects ... something. I don't know if it's looking for
BMC access. Here's a sample command:

nodediscover assign -e MACADDRESS -n NODENAME
No matching discovery candidates found

Of course, "nodediscover rescan" returns nothing.

To me it appears nodes have to be "discovered" (I can't simply say "if
you see this MAC address, deploy as node X"), and so far I've found no
documentation on doing this with VMs. A typical Google search results
in unhelpful pages, and more unhelpful "AI-generated" content.

So ... what's the secret incantation to setup up VMs for deployment?
Or is there none?
