Thanks for the fast response! The advantage of the Matlab file format is that 
only a very limited set of drawing routines is used to construct most of it's 
vector plots. I don't know whether this is also the case for gnuplot. If I 
find some time, I'll try to figure it out. It should be doable though, as for 
the matgen script I've spent most of my time learning the Tcl syntax :)
