It isn't stateless if you're editing text.  However, it is clearly an
error that if you attempt to change to, say, subscript as the "current"
style while not editing any text, it will change the bullet/checkmark
even though it reports the attempt as an error.

I would think the better way to do it would be to hide or disable those
menu entries except during text editing.

Thanks for pointing it out.   I hadn't noticed it before.
