I think something needs to be done about it, because as it stands, and
as you already noted, the "cycle" selection is per-element, and the
element selection is per window; selecting things in both windows at
the same time is the cause of the crash condition. Since you intend to
remove the cycle selection from the element record, then you should
have no difficulty implementing separate edit/select.
