Hello Rob,
Hi again, Tim. I guess I just sent this message to the list instead of to you.
That's good, as there are people who read the list who are much more versed in Apple OS-X than I am (I don't have any Apple computers; I'm strictly a Linux guy) (not entirely true; I have an iPad, but that's iOS, so a different beast).
I wish there was a package that worked with Homebrew. By the accounts I’ve found, it’s significantly better than Fink and MacPorts, and I’ve standardized on it. I’ve tried compiling xcircuit myself but that just leads down a rabbit hole. First it says there’s something wrong with pkg-config, so I tried to install it but failed, after hundreds of lines of incomprehensible Terminal output, including such gems as: *gatomic.c:416:10: **warning: **incompatible integer to pointer conversion passing* * 'gsize' (aka 'unsigned long') to parameter of type 'gpointer'* * (aka 'void *') [-Wint-conversion]* return g_atomic_pointer_and ((volatile gpointer *) atomic, val); * ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~* * * along with complaints about things like PATH and setting environment variables. I’m sure this is helpful to somebody, but it isn’t to me. Then I tried creating my own Homebrew “formula” per their instructions, but that led to another rabbit hole. Couldn’t there be a release that “just works”? Running OS X El Capitan.
The main issue is whose port happens to have a version of Tcl/Tk that runs under X11. However, all the stuff you showed there about gatomic.c and so on, I don't have any idea where it comes from; nothing in the xcircuit source code. I've heard that the Fink version works, because there's a Fink package for X11-based Tcl/Tk, but that's about as much as I know about it.
