It looks like an Xcode bug, although it’s not what you think.

AFAICT, the bug is that when you change the storyboard identifier, Xcode 
doesn’t actually save the identifier to the storyboard file until you switch 
away to a different file. So, although you *thought* you set the identifier to 
“initial”, you didn’t really.

It may be a bit more complicated than that, but this much I could see looking 
at the storyboard file in TextEdit.

This also doesn’t explain why ‘instantiateInitialController’ returned nil.
