Falling back to earlier Xcode releases is only problematic when the project file format has also been revised _and_ you have permitted Xcode to update the format of your projects.
This is less of a problem if you backup your project files and not just your source (ie. check your .xcodeproj bundle into Git or Subversion). Revisions to the project file format are uncommon.
