Hello list,
This is a long shot, I know, but VoiceOver on my Mac Mini is doing something
very strange in Xcode that I never saw on my Macbook Air. I’m wondering if
anyone might, by some chance, have a clue what the problem is and how I could
fix it. I can’t just use the Air, because this Mini is more powerful and, more
importantly, the Air is out of disk space while the Mini has a blank 240GB SSD
waiting to be filled.

The problem is this. As I arrow around, be it in code or in a storyboard
outline table, VoiceOver is supposed to speak the text or item I land on, so I
know what it is. What it does, more often than not, is say the currently
selected button in the Inspector group instead. For example, instead of reading
a line of code to me, it might say “Connections inspector, selected radio
button”. It can do it once and then be fine for a while, or it can do it with
every press of an arrow key over and over again. At times, this makes Xcode
unusable; it’d be like you looking at your screen, and every time you scroll,
the message “connections inspector radio button selected” appears and fills
your entire monitor.

I’m on 7.2 beta, OS X 10.11.1. As I said, I never saw this on the Air, all
through the 7.x betas and 10.11 betas, leading me to think this is
device-specific somehow. My VoiceOver settings are the same, because both
machines use a disk image in iCloud for preference syncing. I’ve tried moving
the mouse pointer to where I’m working, in case it was on an inspector and VO
was reading what’s under the mouse for some reason, but that makes no
difference at all. As I said, I realize how unlikely it is that someone can
offer any suggestions, since there are so few VO users in programming at all,
but I felt it was worth a try. Who knows, maybe someone noticed something like
this while running the Accessibility Inspector? Anyway, if anyone has any
suggestions, I’d love to hear them. After rebuilding this Mini, then waiting
for a final part to come, I was set to dive back into Xcode… Now this is
stopping me. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
