Gary, I went through the full process on the AppleID website, including email validation. I logged into iTunes Connect using the new AppleID, then I went back to Xcode, deleted the old account and added a new one with the updated AppleID. It added with no problems. The problems came when trying to do the upload (or export) after doing an archive build, as I mentioned below.
