Has anyone looked into downloading real-time METAR (and even TAF) as well as radar-derived imagery (current precipitation) based on the current location? Some of these could be shown on the moving map, and information like surface wind could be useful during outlandings. Maybe there are winds-aloft reports downloadable somewhere, too. For METARs, http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/metar.shtml works internationally. It should be easy to find the nearest METAR provider.
I have just today set up my iPaq 310 to connect to an iPhone (Personal Hotspot) via Bluetooth PAN and EDGE/GPRS. This was relatively simple. I would expect that in-flight connectivity will be patchy, but occasional automatic updates when a signal is available would be sufficient. The advent of modern (Android powered) devices with 3G connectivity could make real-time data download a feature attractive to many. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fulfilling the Lean Software Promise Lean software platforms are now widely adopted and the benefits have been demonstrated beyond question.
