Many pilots use sunglasses in the cockpit and even blublockers as indicated
by Evan (I personally use blublockers) making things even worse. The funny
thing is we are looking for the brightest sun-readable screen and then use
sunglasses. Oh well, no choice for many of us really, we must use the
sunglasses, it is just too bright outside.

The good news is that even with sunglasses the visibility of the dark text
over the light background is still excellent.

So my recommendation is to use a light color for the background, dark text
over it and highlight the selected box/item with a dark border around the
box.
