This is never an issue for me on my Dell Streak. Ramy do I remember correctly that you also use android version? I can see how this is a problem on old WinCE devices but I thought modern sensitive touchscreen is fine.
And having said that I wouldn't like to loose (some of) the single tap functionality. I noticed Max commited a solution just changing the treshold from 300ms to 500ms, I hope that helps. I feel a beter taping and gestures system would be possible but I'm not sure how should it looki like. For now a suggestion about a "Menu button" infobox is a good one think. This would appear in a fresh standard profile, so that first time users would have easier time to get into the menu.
