You can turn off the auto toggle between modes. This is how I resolved this
issue. Also make sure to set your sail trail to full.
There are couple of enhancement requests which will greatly improve the use of
snail trail, hopefully they will be considered for 6.5:

I had few flights with 6.4 so far and am very pleased. It seem to work
flawlessly. I especially find the following enhancements very helpful:
1 - being able to configure the map list so it shows up only when touching near
a waypoint or airspace.
2 - Being able to configure OLC calculation to goal/next waypoint instead of
your current position, very helpful when you try to fly certain OLC distance
such as 500km and need to know when to turn for your last leg back home.
3 - Accurate and instantaneous head wind/tail wind calculation. If your flight
computer provide TAS such as 302, you should use the "head wind abbreviated"
infobox instead of just the "head wind". Not sure about the choice of names, it
should be "head wind instantaneous", and it is far more accurate than the
estimated head wind which is calculated from the estimated vector wind which
does not get updated until you make the next turn.
4 - Wind arrow infobox, which adds an arrow to the numeric wind data.
5 - Goto button in map list, although it is still missing from other places
such as waypoint list.
6 - the addition of the home airport to the recently used waypoints so you can
easily switch back to it after selecting another waypoint.
