There are indeed different settings for wind calculation:
circling - wind is calculated based on circling drift.
zigzag - wind is calculated when making heading changes of more than certain
degrees. I believe it needs airspeed for this option.
Both - wind is calculated using both methods.
Extrernal - this option overrides the others, and uses the wind calculated by
your flight computer if available. If you have 302, I recommend this setting,
as I found the 302 wind calculation to be more accurate and timely then XCSoar
internal calculations. I also recommend using the 'head wind abbreviated' info
box for instantaneous accurate head wind/tail wind calculation, assuming
accurate TAS is available from your flight computer.
