As far as I know they use 2 methods to detect release from tow, whichever 
happens first:
1 - beginning of a typical glider circle.
2 - top of the first climb (beginning of altitude loss).

Did anyone try to ask OLC for their precise algorithm? I wouldn't  think they 
have reasons not to share it, but I could be wrong...
