After considering all the forgoing suggestions for an ALTERNATE NAVIGATION system for XCSoar, I believe there is a relatively simple solution that fits within the current XCSoar architecture and requires little user input to execute. How the Next info box is handled is the key to making the change from navigating the task to navigating to an alternate. The following concept relies on assigning the NEXT info box exclusively to task navigation and assigning ALTERNATE info boxes exclusively to navigating to a specified waypoint. Activation of either the NEXT info box or an ALTERNATE info box will determine current navigation status, i.e. TASK and ALTERNATE info boxes must be assigned an active status which will determine which navigation mode is executed.
TASK NAVIGATION (series of waypoints to be navigated in sequence) * Activating the NEXT info box means you are on a TASK. * NEXT info box is only used to display next task waypoint, never an alternate. * TASK needs to be loaded for TASK navigation to be activated. * The default when TASK is loaded is: TASK navigation is active. * To activate TASK navigation either load a task or if loaded and not active, click/tap NEXT info box. ALTERNATE NAVIGATION (GoTo a specified waypoint) * ALTERNATE info boxes initialize empty and maybe set to empty when a task is loaded. Initializing empty or load last value could be set as a user option * To activate ALTERNATE navigation: click/tap ALTERNATE info box. * To select an ALTERNATE use current XCSoar methods, e.g. select from waypoint list and select GoTo, click waypoint on map and select GoTo, etc. Selecting a waypoint in this manner will automatically activate ALTERNATE NAVIGATION and load waypoint data into the ACTIVE ALTERNATE info box. NOT into NEXT info box which is current behaviour . * Activating an ALTERNATE info box means you are navigating to an interim waypoint before proceeding on task to the next waypoint. * Arrival at the ALTERNATE could make an automatic switch to task mode and set navigation to the Next waypoint in the task. May need a user option to control this behaviour. *To abort the ALTERNATE before arrival and proceed on task click the NEXT info box. * When no task is loaded last three actions do not apply navigation focus remains on the ALTERNATE waypoint.
