The background circle part of the logo is not critical to understanding the
logo - you can do pretty much anything to it and the result is still
obviously XCSoar-related. This is handled well on the website (designed by
Tobias) where the different sections are themed with different colours and
the logo background changes colour to match.
If the logo design is treated as sacrosanct then anything containing it
inevitably has to be designed around it. I think it's much more practical
to allow the logo to be altered to suit the context, and whoever's
designing the context should be allowed to make their own judgement as to
what looks right.
