we used to use this (well, ~/Mail) as the default but more innocent users 
occasionally ended up deleting (!) their email since they didn't know what it 
was. after all, they couldn't remember making it so how important could it 
be? ;)

so one may want to be very cautious about auto-creating user-visible 
directories that contain data.
