or one could even match the windowId in the NotificationItem with the windowId in the taskbar item(s) (something that's probably already gathered as part of the process of match up applications with their windows) if we can associate notifications, systemtray entries and applications with window IDs, then it would be pretty easy. otherwise, yes, we'll need some extra bookkeeping somewhere to make that magic happen. but it's completely doable. > but I wondered if such an usage had already been discussed. yes, and is one of the things we had in mind when designing this spec. part of Lubo's and I's original discussions about this 4-5 years ago touched on this even :) i'm glad we're finally getting to the point where we can turn all these hopes and dreams into implementable realities. btw, if you will be implementing support for this spec in gnome-panel that would be absolutely _great_ and we're happy to answer questions and refine the spec as needed as you go. we managed to do it in one 6-month release cycle, and that including all the pain of design (both the spec and API), so hopefully you will be able to do it in a reasonable time span as well if the spirit takes you :) it would be great to have two (or more) implementations of this, as well, as that tends to prove a design well (and highlight weaknesses yet to be uncovered). -- Aaron J.
