Media type parameters should be supported; when the media type is not substantially different, parameters should be used instead of creating bogus subclasses. Remember that XDG aims to be a standard, not a random playground where everything goes as long as it works. Example parameters: text character set, image dimensions (important for low-resoultion devices), audio subtitles, whatever. Of course, these parameters can be either required or returned; when they are returned, the value returned must be based on the actual resource.
