oops! you're right, but I don't think this explains
the problem I'm seeing. I did build under jdk 1.3. I
am running the xdoclet sample build under jdk 1.4b3. 

That said, does anyone else have the same problems
that I'm seeing, as described in my earlier message,
particularly the compilation problems, in which remote
interfaces, pks, and data objects are generated with
import statements that reference themselves. This
seems to be a no-no with the JDK 1.3.1 and 1.4b3
compilers.
