And if he read all the source code as well we wouldn't need to produce any 
documentation at all...  IMO, "Look into the .xdt files directly to find 
all defined merge points." (http://xdoclet.sourceforge.net/merge.html) 
might just as well read "We can't be bothered to document things fully."

However, it isn't (or shouldn't be) necessary to examine the template 
files anyway - there's a section in the stuff that generates the docs (in 
antdoc-xdoc.xdt) that includes a list of the merge files (based on 
@xdoclet.merge-file class-level tags in the subtasks), so they should 
already be documented.  If there's any that aren't (and currently I don't 
think many are), perhaps they should be raised as Documentation bug 
reports :-)
