I don't think the amount of code in the code base is the problem
(Projects like JBoss, NetBSD or Linux have even bigger code bases).
For me it is how to find out who calls what, when and why.
I'd really like to help making the parser better wrt flagging errors
or warnings. But with the actual architecture of 1.2, I did not yet
find out where to start digging.

Yes, but please stick to ant. 
I downloaded 4 MB of maven zip, started a little command and had to
see maven grabs some 20MB of jars (some of which I have in netbeans,
eclipse, jboss, .... already on my system) just to more or less print
an error message.
This is a huge wall to cross before being able to contribute.

This probably depends on how Xdoclet stands wrt JSR 175 and JSR 181.

Please don't make it too fine grained. At a certain point the
overhead of getting everything together is higher than the gain
from the fine grain.
