I think it's common with open source projects. Only small fraction of us is ever paid to do this work, so it's done because of just fun doing it, or because people actually need this in course of paid work. I personally like educational value of opensource - you can exchange ideas with really good skilled people. And it's not given that this skill level is available in given workplace. You have to invest a lot yourself, if you ar eusing opensource.
