First, xdoclet tags are automatically documented with
nice xdoc format ( there is some work done for
confluence, for those who has it ) 
( information is gathered from javadocs of tag
interfaces ) 

Second - tags are self-checking and will bomb
with messages like "you idiot forgot this or that
parameter, or used unallowed value, only values
allowed are... "

Third, there is bombing from template ( like when you
map collection by hibernate and forget collection key
)  - but I did not managed yet to throw exception
malicious enough to make maven build fail... ( though
there is error message )
