All this being said, I have managed to fix the XDoclet 1 HibernateTagHandler class so that the "forAllSubclasses" will allow you to use the "extends" attribute for a @hibernate.subclass definition when the mapped class happens to be an interface, and the subclass implements that interface.

It's defined by HibernateSubclassTag.java :) As far as I can see, hibernate plugin will work with interfaces. But if you like to assure this feature is to stay - would you like to provide test case?
